‘Invincible’ no more: a disruption in the supply chain can be game changing for ProReferee

What happens when a business loses 20% of its customers almost overnight? It’s a disaster, no doubt — but not necessarily a fatal one, as Jason Sholl learned.

For Sholl, the president and CEO of San Jose-based ProReferee, that 20% loss consisted of sales to soccer leagues and tournaments — matches and games that had been canceled as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic — while the remaining 80% of his business were sales to individual referees. Sholl, who founded ProReferee in 2009 as a supplier of apparel and equipment for soccer referees and leagues, said his revenues dropped 60% through 2020 — a combination of having $0 in league sales and a drop in sales to individual consumers.
